Commemoration of Santa Rosa battle

20 March 2023

Every March 20th, GSD International School Costa Rica, community commemorates the Battle of Santa Rosa during the national conflict between 1856-1857.

The confrontation between the troops of General José Joaquín Mora, brother of President Juan Rafael Mora Porras at that time, and the hundred soldiers under the command of William Walker was a historical feat for the Costa Rican people, since the battle lasted about twenty minutes.

Behind this brief battle, was Walker's idea of annexing Costa Rica and other Central American countries to the United States. Walker wanted to establish the same economy of the southern states of the United States, slavery in coffee farms.

The confrontation between Mora's soldiers and Walker took place at the Hacienda de Santa Rosa. Mora's men, despite being in minority, but knowing their land, hid strategically setting a trap to Walker's troops, who had to retreat and flee.

A historic battle to be recognized!
